Welcome to Sri Lanka
As you touchdown in Sri Lanka at the international airport in Colombo, your chauffeur-guide will be waiting for you. You will head straight to Sigiriya on a three-hour drive into central Sri Lanka passing through beautiful landscapes and thick, green grasslands and rice fields. Upon arrival at your hotel in Sigiriya take some time relax and refresh after your long day of travel and enjoy the hotel facilities or if you prefer why not venture out into the surrounding area and explore the land and villages!
Exploring Central Sri Lanka
Spend the day relaxing and adjusting to a new pace of life in Sigiriya. Enjoy breakfast as your hotel before taking on the day however you like. Some may prefer to simply relax at your hotel but if you are looking for something different this can easily be arranged. There are several village walks available as well as heading into the city centre to experience some of Sri Lanka’s culture. Enjoy your restful day before the real exploration and discovering begins tomorrow.
Climbing The Rock Fortress
Your driver will meet you in the morning after breakfast to take you to the legendary Rock Fortress of Sigiriya. Here you will climb the fortress to take in the panoramic views over Sigiriya. There approximately 1200 steps up to the top but it is well worth it with exhilarating views across. Once you have descended and refuelled with a delicious traditional Sri Lankan lunch, bicycles will be provided so you can cycle through the surrounding local villages. In the evening your driver will drive you to your hotel for the night.
Buddhist Relics and Minneriya National Park
Today you have the day at leisure to spend however you like, either relaxing at your hotel and absorbing the beautiful surroundings and landscapes, or if day trips to the ancient royal cities of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura can be arranged. Minneriya National Park is not far from Sigiriya and can be a wonderful day trip where you may get to see elephants, leopards and the eminent Sri Lankan sloth bear, and take in the sights as the sun sets over this beautiful park.
Dambulla Cave Temples and Matale Spice Gardens
In the morning after breakfast your chauffeur-guide will meet you to transfer you to Kandy. This journey south into the heart of the island can be broken up by stopping in Dambulla and visiting the Cave Temple, a masterpiece of art and architecture that beautifully displays Sri Lanka’s history and culture. Upon arrival in Kandy, you will be dropped off at your hotel where you can check in and spend the evening relaxing. Kandy has a gentle pace of life which is hard not to fall into, so make the most of it!
The Temple of The Tooth
An early start this morning in order to attend the morning ceremony at the famous Temple of The Tooth. Be sure to have your lotus flowers ready to share with Buddhists from all over the world. The temple is very impressive and is beautifully spiritual. After the ceremony you have the day at leisure to explore Kandy. If you prefer an organised tour of the city can be arranged. After your day in Kandy, your driver will meet you to drive you back to your hotel for the night.
Today you have the day at leisure to spend in Kandy however you like. Walking around the lake in the city of visiting a local elephant sanctuary are family favourites, and for those seeking a bit of adventure we recommend river rafting on the river Gingathena , the river where ‘The Bridge Over The River Kwai’ was filmed. The rafting is suitable for all levels and is great fun for everyone as well as a unique and once in a lifetime experience. Return to your hotel in evening to spend your last night in Kandy.
Tea Plantations and British hotels
In the morning after breakfast your driver will be ready to take you to the home of the Tea Country, Nuwara Eliya. This two-and-a-half-hour drive south is beautifully green, showing you the lush forestry and jungles that make up Sri Lanka. Upon arrival in Nuwara Eliya you will visit a tea plantation and enjoy some freshly brewed tea with the field workers. Enjoy walking around the tea plantations and exploring the small factories before checking in to your colonial hotel in the hills that overlooks the tea plantations.
horton Plains Excursion
As you wake in Nuwara Eliya you may very well feel as if you have been transported back in time to the British Colonial Ceylon! In the morning your chauffeur-guide will take you to Horton Plains, a national park where you can see some of the most magnificent sites of Sri Lanka. Stay until the sun sets and watch the colours of the sky change and the park come alive with night time creatures! Your chauffeur-guide will be available to take you back to your hotel whenever you wish.
From Tea Plantations to the Seaside
After breakfast and a final look across the beautiful landscapes of Nuwara Eliya, your driver will take you to Mirissa. This five hour journey to the south is made up of beautiful scenery and charming villages. If you would like to break up your drive why not stop in Tangalle for a Rice Field Trek? For those that are eager to get to the beautiful white sand beaches of Sri Lanka’s south coast though, power through this journey and soon you’ll be in Sri Lanka’s paradise.
Enjoy a leisurely morning at your hotel before setting out to make the most of this beachside town. Mirissa is famous for it’s beautiful white sand beaches and spas. Spend the day relaxing on the beach, at a spa, coffee shop hopping or even doing yoga and Pilates at one of the many studios. If you prefer boat or sightseeing tours can be arranged during which you can visit the nearby towns, the harbour and if on a boat tour, visit the floating villages. Spend the evening in the town for dinner before returning to your hotel for the night.
Enjoying Sri Lanka’s South Coast
An early start this morning in order to be at harbour for a 630AM departure to head out to go dolphin and whale watching. Whilst aboad be sure to keep your eyes open to spot the giants of the ocean! Seeing these ocean creatures is a unique and once in a lifetime experience that will stick with you forever and we are sure that it will be all you can talk about over dinner! Your driver will meet you at the harbour and take you for dinner before returning to your hotel for the night.
The West Coast
After breakfast you will be met by your chauffeur-guide who will transfer you to the historic port of Galle. Galle is a beautiful city that has so much to offer so be sure to explore what Galle has to offer. Venture through the old town and it’s fortifications before visiting the Japanese peace pagoda. There are many beautiful beaches in Galle but if you are all beached out, why not visit the Galle Fort Lighthouse and the Dutch Reformed Church to admire the architecture. After dinner in Galle you driver will take you to your Galle hotel for the night.
Spend the morning relaxing in the historic city of Galle, enjoying the sea breeze and the culture and history this city has to offer. Your chauffeur-guide will take you on a guided city tour so you can learn about the significance of this city and about its Dutch and Portuguese roots. For those looking for something a bit different, a cycling tour of the city and the local villages can be arranged, or if you prefer to spend the day by the beach, a day trip to a local white sand beach called Unawatuna Beach can be arranged.
Saying Goodbye to Sri Lanka
Depending on the time of your flight from the international airport in Colombo, after breakfast you may have the opportunity to explore Galle further and do some last minute souvenir shopping. From Galle your driver will transfer you to the airport to begin your travels back home. As you trip to Sri Lanka comes to an end we look back on our favourite moments and places.
